Village Homes is a 60 acre 240 home neighborhood built in Davis, Ca in the 1970’s. It was the first major solar development in the world featuring passive and active space heating, natural cooling and solar water heating. The design pioneered the concept of natural drainage demonstrating how rain water can be used on site in a way that aesthetically enhances the beauty of urban development. It has proven to increase water quality and reduce downstream runoff flows to pre-development levels. Village Homes was also the pioneer in edible landscaping reintroducing food production into residential development by setting aside land for gardens, orchards and vineyards. Fruit and nut trees as well as vines are also used around the house for summer shade and ornamentally in the landscape. The village center has 4000 sq. ft. of office space, a small restaurant, dance studio, community center with childcare, swimming pool and an amphitheatre. There are direct pedestrians and bike access throughout the village but limited auto access and thoroughfare.
