Michael N. Corbett, Master Builder

Shepherds Close completed in 2008 was built on a third of an acre in downtown Davis, Ca. The 5 houses with 2 rental units are oriented for passive solar heating and natural cooling. They have solar water heating and 3 units have photovoltaic electrical generation which produces about 80% of the resident’s electric use. As a supplement to heat pumps, the units have high efficiency clean burning wood fireplaces for use when atmospheric conditions permit. There is no on-site use of fossil fuels. The location close to downtown Davis and on a bus route makes it possible to live without an automobile. The project incorporates natural drainage and edible landscaping with gardens and 33 fruit trees. The site and landscaping plans were produced in collaboration with Chris Corbett design (website.) Chris also designed houses 2 and 3. Houses 1, 4, and 5 were designed in collaboration with designer, Elizabeth McDermott (website).
